The University of Nottingham has selected Beacon from five shortlisted companies to design the refurbishment of the Med B catering facility, operated by its catering department.

The client design brief was clear and simple – to create an innovative, flexible design that delivers the “wow!” factor using high quality durable finishes. Beacon formulated its design approach around the key concept of “Remedy” – a playful take on the location of the facility within the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Medical School.

The fundamental idea of dispensing remedies was explored, in the way that a pharmacy dispenses medicine. Within the “Remedy Deli” food and drink are dispensed as a remedy to flagging energy levels. “The Park”, a green and social space, was created as a remedy to the strains of work and the “Reading Room” was also created, taking the written word or knowledge as a remedy to ignorance.

The project is to be completed over the coming Christmas period, so watch this space for the finished product!
